First Energy and Allegheny Energy File Merger Application

FirstEnergy Corporation of Akron, Ohio and Allegheny Energy Inc, formerly of Hagerstown, Maryland (1996 to 2004, presently Greensburg, Pennsylvania), filed a merger application Thursday with the Maryland Public Service Commission. The merged company says it will establish a regional headquarters somewhere in central or western Maryland if its proposed merger goes through. They announced the $4.7 billion deal in February.

The Maryland territory is served by Allegheny’s Potomac Edison subsidiary. Potomac Edison has about 250,000 Maryland customers in Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, Howard, Montgomery and Washington counties. (AP, The Daily Record, 5/27/10)
